چکیده

In our review article “ATG13: Just a companion, or an executor of the autophagic program?” (Alers S, et al., Autophagy 10:6, 944–56), we stated: “Notably, no Drosophila or C. elegans homolog of Atg17 or RB1CC1 has been described so far.” This statement is incorrect. Two papers described the identification and characterization of Drosophila Atg17/RB1CC1/FIP200 and established that this fly gene is the homolog of the corresponding human gene (Kim M, et al., Autophagy 9:8, 1201–13 and Nagy P, et al., Autophagy 10:3, 453–67). We would like to apologize to the readership of Autophagy in general and to the authors of those 2 manuscripts in particular for this erroneous statement. The vesicular trafficking pathway for the lysosomal degradation of cellular components was discovered in the early 1960s by Christian de Duve, who also introduced the terms “autophagy” and “autophagic vacuole.” It took 3 more decades until the first regulating genes could be identified in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Another decade later, Daniel J Klionsky and colleagues integrated the various aut...

Autophagy initiation correlates with the autophagic flux in 3D models of mesothelioma and with patient outcome

Understanding the role of autophagy in cancer has been limited by the inability to measure this dynamic process in formalin-fixed tissue. We considered that 3-dimensional models including ex vivo tumor, such as we have developed for studying mesothelioma, would provide valuable insights. Using these models, in which we could use lysosomal inhibitors to measure the autophagic flux, we sought a m...

AUTOPHAGY-RELATED11 plays a critical role in general autophagy- and senescence-induced mitophagy in Arabidopsis.

Autophagy-mediated turnover removes damaged organelles and unwanted cytoplasmic constituents and thus plays critical roles in cellular housekeeping and nutrient recycling. This "self eating" is tightly regulated by the AUTOPHAGY-RELATED1/13 (ATG1/13) kinase complex, which connects metabolic and environmental cues to the vacuolar delivery of autophagic vesicles. Here, we describe the Arabidopsis...

The ATG1/ATG13 Protein Kinase Complex Is Both a Regulator and a Target of Autophagic Recycling in Arabidopsis C W

Autophagy is an intracellular recycling route in eukaryotes whereby organelles and cytoplasm are sequestered in vesicles, which are subsequently delivered to the vacuole for breakdown. The process is induced by various nutrient-responsive signaling cascades converging on the Autophagy-Related1 (ATG1)/ATG13 kinase complex. Here, we describe the ATG1/13 complex in Arabidopsis thaliana and show th...
